receiving that phone call, she rushed to the construction site
to be with Kurt. “I asked, ‘Is he going to die?’”
Emergency crews on scene worked to stabilize Ferguson
and lift him out of the basement window.
“I just saw a lot of emergency personnel working with
him and as a nurse and I knew it was serious. Kurt couldn’t
move anything other than his left leg,” said Denille. “I was
glad to see that he was awake and alert and still Kurt.”
Calling STARS
The emergency crews on site made the decision to alert
STARS to transport Ferguson to a trauma hospital.
“We always tend to prepare for the worst, so you start
mentally preparing for bleeding and airway problems,” said
Shannon Kock, STARS flight paramedic and a member of
Ferguson’s STARS crew that transported him from scene.
“There was a lot of tension where the rebar sat and a lot of
potential for things to go wrong.”
“STARS was really important because we knew it would
be a smooth ride. We knew that there would be professionals
on board and that they would take care with every little
movement to save and preserve his life,” said Denille.
Once landing at the hospital, flight nurse Jennifer Pengelly
stayed with Ferguson to monitor his vital signs and to ensure
that he did not move. Once inside the hospital, he was
alert and in good spirits and even asked his mom to take
some photos.
After surgery, Ferguson spend 100 days in the hospital
working with physical therapists.

– Heather Ferguson
Tearing up, Ferguson’s mother, Heather, recalls
a silver lining.
“On Dec. 24, he actually took his first steps with the support
of his therapists. That was like one of those priceless
Christmas gifts that we had. I’m thankful for every person
who made his life possible because of their skill and expertise.
Each person doing their job the best they could brought
him forward.”
“I’m impressed with how highly trained the STARS
crews are,” said Ferguson. “Because of their quick response,
I get to see my family and friends.” n
