Innovative Trenchless
Underground Construction
Awareness Safety Training
The Alberta Municipal Health and
Safety Association recently launched an
important training initiative
In 2019, Alberta Municipal Health and Safety Association (AMHSA) was allocated
$240,000 through creative sentencing by the Provincial Court of Alberta
to enhance training related to underground tunneling and boring activities.
This has allowed AMHSA to produce an innovative Trenchless Underground
Construction Awareness Program geared to municipal supervisors and workers
visiting trenchless underground construction sites as well as a secondary audience
of service companies supporting municipal operations.
This creative sentence was in response to a tragic, fatal incident that occurred
inside a drainage tunnel on a municipal work site. A conveyor belt system on a
tunnel boring machine was being repositioned by three workers when it moved
unexpectedly, causing the death of one of the workers. AMHSA’s new awareness
program fills a gap in resources by providing an overview for workers who are
new to trenchless construction sites, allowing them to walk onto the site with the
ability to recognize, identify, assess and respond to potential hazards.
