“All those things you hear people say about
the strength of an association are true …
As single member companies, we can
advocate as much as we want, but my
involvement with ARHCA has shown me that
an association is a more effective vehicle for
addressing concerns and getting results.”

What do you see is the biggest
challenge for the industry in the
next year or two?
IM: I think the biggest challenge is not
knowing what the future is going to
hold. Right now, there is lots of activity,
but we can’t see beyond a year
or two, because government spending
plans are unknown. It’s great to see
three-year rolling budgets, but it’s challenging
for companies to invest in capital
and people when they don’t know
what’s coming.
ARHCA’s idea of a Public Highway
Trust is an innovative solution because
the highways are an asset, but they are
managed like a department. Personally,
I want our infrastructure to be taken
care of. If government were to set up
a trust, it would allow for different
financing arrangements, and would
make it easier for planning, P3s, ring
roads, etc. The issue is usually that our
road network can’t sustain swings in
funding. It’s hard on the infrastructure
just like it’s hard on people.
Where do you see the industry in
10 years?
IM: Our industry continues to become
more sophisticated with an increased
use of technology. From surveying
to equipment control and grading,
technology is becoming embedded in
everything we do. As a result, I think
we will continue to see lots of pressure
on finding efficiencies including
with carbon emissions and waste
reduction. When most people think of
roadbuilding, they don’t really associate
that with technology, but it’s
quickly becoming a big part of our
everyday lives. n
ARHCA looks forward to continuing to
work with McKinnon and to learning
more about his ideas for a better, more
sustainable industry.
