Meet ARHCA’s
1st Vice-Chair,
Ian McKinnon
By Rae Thygesen, ARHCA
Ian McKinnon is the first vice-chair of the ARHCA board of directors, and manager,
Civil Operations at PCL Construction. Growing up on a farm just outside
of Regina, McKinnon was always around construction and engineering, even
before he realized it; from grain bins to machinery, there was always something
that needed fixing. It wasn’t much of a surprise, then, that McKinnon was accepted
into the University of Saskatchewan’s Faculty of Engineering. While his university
experience was a great one, the post-graduation economy certainly wasn’t
the best for a newly minted engineer. Luckily for McKinnon, PCL hired him on for
the summer in 1990 before officially offering him a permanent position in 1992.
With more than 25 years in commercial and civil construction, McKinnon’s
career progression has been a dynamic mix of complex and varied experiences. He
began with foundational experiences, such as on-site field engineering and estimating
and coordinating major commercial and industrial projects. He moved into
civil infrastructure project management, then advanced to program management
operational roles, and finally management of a major business unit. McKinnon
has rejoined PCL Construction to provide leadership and growth potential for
PCL’s Northern Alberta Civil Infrastructure market and growth potential for the
civil group.

“The issue is
usually that our
road network
can’t sustain
swings in
funding. It’s
hard on the
infrastructure
just like it’s hard
on people.”
