Asset management
Additionally, onsite LiDAR scans are beneficial to asset
management throughout different stages of a project’s
lifecycle (design, construction and delivery). With detail
of the assets and their location within the context of the
entire jobsite, assets can be managed with descriptive measurements
(i.e., height, width, distance to roadway, rightof
way clearance, etc.). Another benefit of LiDAR is that
georeferenced point clouds ensure assets and their measurements
already exist within a real-world coordinate
system. Therefore, an asset in LiDAR data can be cross-referenced
with historical data or design drawings, reducing
the work required to understand the characteristics of the
current jobsite.

Another benefit of a LiDAR scan goes beyond the
applications outlined in this article. Has a change-order
ever required an additional survey? Have you ever needed
additional measurements on a jobsite and do not trust
having to interpolate between existing survey points? A
Quantity estimation is a
significant component to
any construction operation…
LiDAR can be used to
quickly survey the entirety
of a construction area and
provide accurate estimates
of pay item quantities.
