Remembering Werner Wenzel
W ith heavy hearts, we are sharing that Werner
Wenzel, chairman for the ARHCA in 1988, passed
away in Calgary on June 3, 2020, at the age of 85.
Werner will be missed by the Lahrmann family and the
employees and friends of Lahrmann Construction Inc. Werner
was born in Germany on Feb. 16, 1935 and immigrated to
Canada in 1953. His involvement with the roadbuilding indus-try
began in 1977 when he was the ADM for Industry and
Commerce in the Lougheed government. Werner left his posi-tion
with the Alberta Government to help set up a Canadian
company and became the first general manager of Lahrmann
Canada. Werner helped the company grow to two full asphalt
paving and base crews, playing a large role in the expansion
of the Alberta highway network. He remained in that posi-tion
until 1992. His relationship with Lahrmann continued for
many more years, providing mentorship and serving as the
hunting guide and master chef when the Lahrmann delegation
came to Alberta every November.
Werner’s government experience was an asset to the road-building
industry. Among his many contributions, Werner was
instrumental in getting the asphalt pavement specification
transitioned to the End Product Specification system that we
use today.
The ARHCA would like to express sincere gratitude for
Werner’s contributions to the industry and his forward-thinking
that helped advance the roadbuilding industry in
Alberta. Rest in peace, Werner. n
