health of a workplace for a specific person is not.
Bullying and harassment is not about physical hazards
or potential risk. It lies with perception, feeling and
human interaction.”4
So, what does a psychologically safe workplace look like?
Is it impacted by organizational culture? A psychologically
safe workplace promotes emotional wellbeing and presents
minimal risks to the mental health of workers and others. A
healthy workplace increases employee engagement, job satis-faction
and performance, and reduces the risk of physical and
psychological health problems, absenteeism and turnover.
Taking these factors into consideration, the answer would be
a resounding “yes.” Culture and safe workplaces are intrinsi-cally
linked to one another. While there will always be ups
and downs, organizational culture and health dictate how
happy, productive and engaged the workforce is. Taking care
of not only the workforce’s physical health but also the psy-chological
health could be one of the most important things
an employer can do. In short, psychologically safe workplaces
are good for business. n
