The AMTA expanded their Driver Appreciation Days
locations this year to six Vehicle Inspection Sites (VIS) over
four days: Strathmore; Atmore; Demmitt, Medicine Hat and
Coutts (northbound only) and Leduc. Volunteers gathered
to build more than 2,000 gift bags, including food and
other items useful to drivers, before handing them off to
commercial drivers passing through the various VIS.
“Driver Appreciation is one of our biggest volunteer draws
and we are always staggered by the generosity of member-ship,
sponsors and their families in giving us their time,” said
AMTA executive director, Kimberley Burfoot. “We are proud
to celebrate drivers and what they do every day, this is just
one small way of giving back.”
Since the construction of Alberta’s highways and move-ment
of goods by truck becoming more prevalent, fleets have
been dedicated to ensuring goods get to where they need
to go, and that recognition has only intensified since the
COVID-19 outbreak.
That recognition was shared with the world via Prime
Minister Justin Trudeau and Alberta Premier Jason Kenney,
among others.
“While many of us are working from home, there are
others who aren’t able to do that – like the truck drivers
who are working day and night to make sure our shelves
are stocked. So, when you can, please thank a trucker for
everything they’re doing and help them however you can,”
Trudeau said.
“On behalf of the government and the people of Alberta, I
want to salute and thank those truck drivers for all that they
are doing under trying circumstances during this pandemic,”
