years after construction is complete. If it’s a roadway, we
would have a group, partner or contractor that would do all
the plowing, sanding/salting and maintenance such as pav-ing
and road repairs. In a building, this means making sure
all the fire, health and safety systems are functional and that
the facility operations are properly maintained.”
Also within the Business unit, the real estate group buys
and owns properties for development – projects such as
building a health services or multi-family residential facility
that can later be managed and perhaps ultimately purchased
through that real estate company.
Above all this, protecting Graham’s people and its partners
and supporting the communities in which they live and work
are ingrained as the company’s core values. The environment
created for employees is a culture that goes across its entire
business, and the Graham approach to safety is clear: all
safety incidents are foreseeable, predictable and preventable.
“We know that good management and a comprehen-sive
program always help,” said Cole. “But we believe a lot
of safety is about the presence of supervision, a culture of
actively caring and leadership engagement. We measure our
leaders to make sure they are constantly engaged in what’s
going on from a safety perspective.”
This same commitment to people and communities is
reflected in Graham’s long-standing ARHCA membership.
“We see this membership as a way to participate in
our industry’s community. ARHCA provides a conduit for
improvements in the construction industry, for education
and for sharing technology. It’s an association that promotes
change for the benefit of our owners, for their owners and
construction partners. And it connects people with crucial
parts of the economic growth in Alberta. I’ve seen a big
change in the ARHCA in the last few years. They spend a
lot of time with local and provincial governments, getting
involved for the betterment of our industry.
