a more intimate setting, taking place in one of the smaller
mezzanine rooms, as opposed to the ballroom where the
Welcome Night and Gala take place. The VIP/First Timers’
Reception was a relaxed atmosphere, where it was easy to
socialize over drinks, before heading to the dinner and fun
night. The people I met at that reception were those that I
built the strongest ties with for the rest of the convention.
When the Rising Star awards were handed out by Mike
“Pinball” Clemons the following day at lunch, it was very
special to stand up with the four other recipients, in recognition
of the tireless hours we each devote in our own ways
to building a better Alberta. I wouldn’t be where I am in my
career without the support of my team at JAPA Equipment
Rentals and JAPA Machinery Group, so I’d like to conclude
with a note of thanks to them. We follow the philosophy
at JAPA that you hire character, because skill is teachable.
Having grown up around heavy-duty mechanics, I knew
a thing or two about heavy equipment, but JAPA trusted
in my character enough to know that they could teach me
everything else I needed to know about equipment along
the way. They supported me when I made the decision to
pursue another degree part time, trusting when I said that I
could apply those skills to growing our business. Finally, they
formed a position that challenges day in and day out in all
the areas for which I’m most passionate. With the continued
support of ARHCA and its member businesses for the next
generation of heavy construction leaders, I hope that our
industry will continue to diversify and thrive. n
