As a leader, van Bruggen does not take for granted the
trust that his employees have in him.
“I want people to feel like they are heard and that they
can trust who’s leading them,” he said.
Growth opportunities
As van Bruggen was finishing high school, his father was
looking to exit his career in ranching and stumbled on an
opportunity to purchase a traffic control rental company.
Together with his brother, after graduating, van Bruggen
decided to help his father with the new venture. The family
was able to grow and diversify the business, beginning
to manufacture signage and distributing additional traffic
safety products. When van Bruggen’s brother decided to
pursue other interests four years ago, van Bruggen bought
him out and began a conversation with his father about his
father’s retirement plans and what that would mean for
Barricades and Signs.
Two years ago, in the midst of van Bruggen’s father’s
retirement planning, Bill Powell of Powell Contracting
from Ontario approached van Bruggen. Powell was looking
to expand into Western Canada and seeking a strategic
partnership opportunity.
“Powell Contracting is successful home-grown, rural
family business – with a very similar start to us – in the
construction world,” said van Bruggen. “They reached out
and timing was everything. It made sense for me to help my
