said Brooks.
He says a good example of this
innovation mindset is that Carmacks’
employees are encouraged to put for-ward
any new ideas they have that
they feel could provide benefits for the
company and its workers. He adds the
best ideas often end up being imple-mented,
and that many of them are
safety related.
According to Brooks, ensuring a safe
work environment is always top of
mind at Carmacks, which carries a cer-tificate
of recognition from the Alberta
Construction Safety Association.
“We definitely put safety first,” said
Brooks. “We begin every meeting that
we do with a safety moment, putting
upfront that a safe work environment is
priority one for us.”
Carmacks Enterprises provides a
wide slate of services to Alberta’s heavy
construction industry. In addition to its
highway maintenance operation, the
company performs highway construc-tion
and surfacing projects, builds and
repairs bridges, does municipal con-struction
work and lays the ground-work
for industrial sites.
Brooks notes that Carmacks has
been a long-time member of the
Alberta Roadbuilders and Heavy
Construction Association, with some
employees of the company assuming
the role of ARHCA president at differ-ent
times.
“We benefit from the associa-tion’s
ability to leverage and lobby
for important measures, and that
includes improving the safety and
working conditions for our workers
out in the field,” Brooks said, add-ing
that the ARHCA provides anoth-er
valuable service in helping to get
new technologies and methodologies
approved by construction industry cli-ents.
