one unit and decrease our environ-mental
footprint as we only have one
truck removing snow from two and a
half lanes. Only one operator is needed,
lowering our overall cost.”
Brooks says of the 24 snow clear-ing
vehicles that Carmacks operates in
Calgary, four are tow plows. Two of the
company’s 10 snow clearing vehicles in
Edmonton are tow plows.
Brooks says the tow plows are
also equipped with sprayers that help
remove ice from the roadway and keep
it from freezing up again once the snow
has been removed.
“We are spraying the surface with
an anti-icing liquid rather than using
traditional granular salt,” said Brooks.
“It’s more efficient. With the granular
product, a good percentage will bounce
off the road surface when there’s traf-fic
driving fast over it, so a fair amount
is wasted.”
Brooks says one of the biggest chal-lenges
for his crews is anticipating when
they might be pressed into action to
clear snow from the highways.
“You can never control when Mother
Nature decides to put some snow down
on you. If it happens to come at the
rush hour when commuters are trying
to get in and out of town, then we’re
out there with 100,000 of our best
friends trying to get our job done,” said
Brooks. “That’s a big benefit of the anti-icing
liquid that we’re using. We can
