Technological innovator
Tollestrup has earned a reputation over the years as being
something of an innovator when it comes to adopting new
technologies. In the 1990s, it was one of the first Alberta
companies to begin to recycle or repurpose used asphalt.
“It is common now in our industry, but in the ‘90s
Tollestrup Construction worked together with the City of
Lethbridge to develop the first RAP recycled asphalt prod-uct
designs and to get them implemented in Lethbridge,”
said Hamilton, adding the company recently invested in a
new Wirtgen W200I milling machine to help reprocess used
asphalt and integrate it back into new asphalt mix.
Another one of the company’s innovations was its
StreetPrint asphalt stamping process. The process allows
almost any kind of design to be cut or etched into asphalt and
can even be used to colour the material.
“What it is basically is once you put down your finished
asphalt and roll it you can actually imprint designs into it
and make it look like cobbles or bricks. It’s basically deco-rative
asphalt. We’ve used it at businesses in fronts, park-ing
lots and even medians through major roadways,” said
Hamilton, adding that the process was extremely popular in
the early 2000s.
Tollestrup has been involved in some of the largest and
most notable construction projects in and around Lethbridge
over the past decade.
It participated in the construction of an outdoor run-ning
track at the University of Lethbridge that is one of the
top-rated tracks in the country and meets the International
