quickly worked his way up the ranks on the project manage-ment
side of things until being named COO a few years ago.
While Tollestrup may be one of the larger construction
companies in southern Alberta today, it comes from pretty
humble roots. After starting in the homebuilding business,
Tollestrup quickly grew its arsenal of equipment and, by
1946, was heavily involved in the mining industry in Taber
and various other locations around the province. In 1949,
the company expanded again when its founder noticed piles
of coal refuse while travelling through the Crowsnest Pass
and saw an opportunity to grow the business. Soon after, he
acquired a processing plant in Salt Lake City and moved most
of the equipment to Blairmore, where it operated until 1955,
when it was sold to West Canadian Colleries.
In the 1950s, the company purchased about 230 acres
of land next to the Old Man River in Lethbridge, where
its headquarters remain. A few years later the company
morphed into Tollestrup Sand and Gravel Company and its
highway paving division became a major player in the con-struction
of Alberta’s highway system. In the mid-1970s,
it sold its highway division as part of an effort to diversify
its holdings.
Today, it’s one of the province’s major asphalt producers
and also produces and crushes its own aggregate. In addi-tion,
it has its own gravel business and manufactures bedding
products for underground contractors, homebuilders and
several municipalities and is heavily involved in roadwork
and major intersection improvements.
“We’re very vertically integrated that way,” Hamilton said.
